Edinburgh
Discover the city where Harry Potter's literary history and Scotland's atmosphere intersect. You'll begin with photographs against Edinburgh Castle, explore Potter-connected corners of Old Town — 21 George IV Bridge, Greyfriars, Victoria Street — and then actually step inside the castle itself.
Departure & Arrival in Edinburgh

You'll touch down at Edinburgh Airport (EDI) at 8:30 AM on Tuesday, Sept 15, after the overnight leg from New York. Your DoubleTree reservation covers tonight, but standard check-in isn't until 3:00 PM, so the front desk can hold your luggage in the meantime — treat the rest of the day as free, jet-lag-friendly time to wander the city before your first scheduled activity tomorrow morning.

Castle Photos & First Full Day
A professional couples photo session set against Edinburgh Castle — pure keepsake, not a sightseeing visit.
Important: this is a photo session around the castle exterior — it is not your Edinburgh Castle tour or entry. That's booked separately for the morning of September 18, when you'll actually go inside.
The photo session is the only scheduled experience today. Everything after it is optional — jet lag gets a vote too.
A deliberately light, wandering evening — not a checklist. Depending on energy, you can:

The Edinburgh That Inspired Magic
Your primary Harry Potter day in Edinburgh.

Nearby: the National Museum of Scotland sits right beside the meeting point, worth a return visit if there's time later in the trip.
This address sits right in the middle of your walking-tour area, so it's easy to work in immediately before or after the guided tour, whichever the day's route favors. It's one of the addresses most closely tied to Edinburgh's Harry Potter literary history — worth knowing that not every local legend about exactly where the books were written is settled fact, so treat the connection as part of the city's storytelling rather than a guaranteed stop on the tour itself.
Fold this in naturally before or after the tour depending on your actual route. Visitors have long noted some of the kirkyard's old gravestone names as possible inspiration for character names — worth a wander with that in mind, taken lightly rather than as established fact. While you're there, look for the grave of Greyfriars Bobby, Edinburgh's famously loyal terrier.
One of Edinburgh's most atmospheric streets — a curved row of colorful shopfronts that visitors often say captures the visual feeling of Diagon Alley. It isn't an actual filming location, but it's a lovely, photogenic place to slow down and browse. Give it real time.
Let the rest of the afternoon breathe — no need to turn every stop into an appointment. Possible stops as you wander: Royal Mile, St Giles' Cathedral, Grassmarket, the historic closes, independent shops, cafés and bookstores.

Castles, Books & Scottish Craft
This meeting point is on the Royal Mile, not at the castle gates — the guide walks the group up from here. Ends at Edinburgh Castle, Castlehill, EH1 2NG, where entry is included. The guided portion ends inside the castle — you're welcome (and encouraged) to keep exploring on your own afterward.
If your castle timing allows, the One O'Clock Gun is worth catching. But you have the Harris Tweed workshop at 2:00 PM — if staying for the gun would make the walk to Sibbald Walk feel rushed, skip it and prioritize the workshop instead.
Build in comfortable time for: leaving the castle, walking down through Old Town / Royal Mile, lunch, and reaching Sibbald Walk before 2:00 PM. Keep lunch quick and convenient along the route rather than a leisurely sit-down — the timing is tighter than it looks on a map.

Stay close to Canongate rather than crossing town for something big. Good options nearby: a pub, coffee, wandering the Royal Mile, exploring Canongate itself, the Scottish Parliament exterior, nearby shops, or simply relaxing.
Your priority Edinburgh bookstore — worth working into whichever point of the day makes the most sense geographically (before the castle if morning allows, or after the workshop if not). Give yourselves real browsing time, not a five-minute photo stop.
J.K. Rowling famously completed Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in a room at The Balmoral. It's a nice optional stop for a drink, tea, a photograph, or just seeing the hotel — not a required appointment.
Tomorrow is an extremely early start — your Highlands tour departs at 7:15 AM. An early night tonight will make a real difference.
The Highlands
The landscape opens up. You'll travel into the Scottish Highlands and board the Jacobite Steam Train through scenery made famous by the Hogwarts Express.
The Hogwarts Express & The Highlands
One of the visual centerpiece days of the whole trip.

The day features the Scottish Highlands, Glenfinnan, the Glenfinnan Viaduct, Loch Shiel, Mallaig, the Jacobite Steam Train, Fort William, Glencoe, and dramatic Highland scenery throughout.
The Jacobite Steam Train journey travels through the scenery used for the Hogwarts Express in the films — including the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct. Real train, real landscape, genuinely magical without needing to embellish it.
Highland weather can shift quickly — sun, wind and rain can all show up in the same afternoon.
No hard reservation tonight — you may well be pleasantly exhausted. Keep dinner easy and close to the hotel.
London
You'll arrive by rail at King's Cross and immediately encounter Platform 9¾, before discovering London's bookish side. Two day trips — Oxford and Warner Bros. Studio Tour — happen from here and have their own sections below; London itself brackets the whole stay, from arrival through departure.
From Scotland to London
Check out and take a short taxi/Uber with your luggage to Edinburgh Waverley station.

Before you leave the station area, this is scheduled deliberately right on arrival so you don't have to cross London again later just for it: the Platform 9¾ trolley photo, and the Harry Potter Shop at King's Cross.
A floating independent bookshop on Regent's Canal, and a priority stop for you two. Pair it naturally with Granary Square and Coal Drops Yard, both close by.
Harry Potter's London
From King's Cross St Pancras, take the Northern Line southbound to London Bridge, then walk to the meeting area. The tour itself includes a short Underground journey and ends at the Palace Theatre, 113 Shaftesbury Ave, W1D 5AY. Provider: See Your City, +44 208 123 4081. Booking Ref 1441282787.
The route may take in Borough Market, the Millennium Bridge, central London Potter locations, and Covent Garden / the West End.
A short pedestrian lane of antiquarian bookshops, prints, maps and collectible editions — a real treat after the walking tour, transitioning from movie locations into literary London.

Include only if routing and energy make sense for the day — a nice-to-have, not a must.
The Final Chapter

Your flight departs at 8:55 AM, well before the hotel's standard 11:00 AM checkout — you'll need to leave the Crowne Plaza much earlier. Heathrow is roughly an hour from King's Cross depending on traffic and mode of transport, plus time for check-in and security, so plan to leave the hotel by around 5:30–6:00 AM with your luggage. Settle up and check out whenever you head for the airport; there's no need to wait until 11:00 AM.
Oxford
A day trip from London into the historic university spaces connected with the films, alongside the literary world of Tolkien, Lewis and Carroll.

There's substantial buffer between your 9:18 AM arrival and the 11:00 AM tour — plenty of room for coffee, breakfast, photographs, and a relaxed walk into central Oxford. No need to add a complicated connection before your prepaid tour.

Highlights may include Christ Church, the famous staircase, the Divinity School, the Bodleian area, Oxford colleges, Potter filming connections, and historic university architecture.
Good to know: Christ Church entrance is self-guided via multimedia, and the Great Hall is closed 10:30 AM–2:00 PM — don't count on seeing it during the tour window. Oxford is a working university, so access to individual buildings can occasionally change at short notice.
After the tour you'll have substantial free time — give yourselves real browsing time here. Weave in literary connections to J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Lewis Carroll and Oxford's broader literary history as discoveries along the way, not another guided tour. (If the Eagle and Child is still closed for restoration, have a backup café in mind rather than counting on it.)

From Paddington, taxi/Uber or the Underground back to the hotel. No major activity planned after this — a full day already.
Warner Bros.
Finally, you'll step behind the curtain and see the actual sets, props, costumes and craftsmanship that created the films.
Step Behind the Magic
The grand finale of the Harry Potter portion of the trip.

A small group (max 8 people), 6 hours total. The guided experience handles the journey from here — do not buy separate rail tickets:
The Great Hall, Diagon Alley, the Forbidden Forest, the Hogwarts Express, Platform 9¾, Gringotts, costumes, props, practical effects, sets, and the Hogwarts Castle model.
Your visit falls during the seasonal Dark Arts experience — a distinctly atmospheric layer on top of the regular tour, worth setting extra time aside for.
Don't rush away after the guided portion. Revisit favorite areas, explore independently, photograph the sets, shop, try Butterbeer, and spend real time with the Hogwarts Castle model. This is meant to be the grand finale of the Potter side of the trip.
No hard dinner reservation — eat after you're back in London.

Travel Essentials
Two things worth handling well before departure day — neither is optional for U.S. passport holders.
A valid passport is required, and it must remain valid for the duration of your UK stay. Double-check passport validity, condition, and that the name on it exactly matches the name on your reservations — well before departure, not the week of.
U.S. travelers visiting the United Kingdom must obtain a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation before travel, unless they fall into a specific exemption category.
