The Trip, In Brief

This page is built to travel with you — pull it up on your phone at any point in the trip and it will tell you where you're supposed to be, how to get there, and what to do while you're there. Harry Potter is the backbone of the journey, but the bookshops, castles, railways and literary corners along the way are what turn it into a full trip through the world that inspired the stories.

Flight details for Sept 15 and Sept 24 will be added here once booked.

Region One

Edinburgh

Discover the city where Harry Potter's literary history and Scotland's atmosphere intersect. You'll begin with photographs against Edinburgh Castle, explore Potter-connected corners of Old Town — 21 George IV Bridge, Greyfriars, Victoria Street — and then actually step inside the castle itself.

September 15

The Journey Begins

Flight Information
Overnight Flight to Edinburgh

You'll fly overnight from the United States to Edinburgh. Flight details to be added once booked — airline, flight number, departure and arrival times, and airport.

Welcome to Edinburgh

How to get there
Taxi / Uber / private transfer
Destination
DoubleTree by Hilton Edinburgh City Centre
Staying
Sept 16 – 20
34 Bread Street, Edinburgh EH3 9AF
Open in Maps

After an overnight flight, don't fight the crowds for public transportation with luggage — a taxi, Uber or private transfer to the hotel is worth it. If your room isn't ready yet, the hotel can hold your bags while you head out.

Capture the Journey
Edinburgh Castle Photo Session

A 1-hour professional photo session set against Edinburgh Castle — pure keepsake, not a sightseeing visit.

Date
September 16

Meeting location
To be added

Important: this is a photo session around the castle exterior — it is not your Edinburgh Castle tour or entry. That's booked separately for the morning of September 18, when you'll actually go inside.

Erica's Tip

The photo session is the only scheduled experience today. Everything after it is optional — jet lag gets a vote too.

Optional
Castle Area → Grassmarket → Victoria Street → Old Town

A deliberately light, wandering evening — not a checklist. Depending on energy, you can:

  • — Browse shops around the Grassmarket
  • — Photograph the colorful curve of Victoria Street
  • — Have an easy first Scottish meal
  • — Head back to the hotel early if jet lag wins

How to get there

What to bring
Comfortable shoes, camera
Meeting point
William Chambers Monument, 45 Chambers Street, Edinburgh — beside the National Museum of Scotland
Open in Maps

Leave the hotel by 9:55–10:00 AM to arrive around 10:15 — that buffer matters, the tour begins promptly at 10:30. Viator 49063P2.

Nearby: the National Museum of Scotland sits right beside the meeting point, worth a return visit if there's time later in the trip.

Bookish Detour
21 George IV Bridge — Historic Elephant House Location

This address sits right in the middle of your walking-tour area, so it's easy to work in immediately before or after the guided tour, whichever the day's route favors. It's one of the addresses most closely tied to Edinburgh's Harry Potter literary history — worth knowing that not every local legend about exactly where the books were written is settled fact, so treat the connection as part of the city's storytelling rather than a guaranteed stop on the tour itself.

Literary Stop
Greyfriars Kirkyard

Fold this in naturally before or after the tour depending on your actual route. Visitors have long noted some of the kirkyard's old gravestone names as possible inspiration for character names — worth a wander with that in mind, taken lightly rather than as established fact. While you're there, look for the grave of Greyfriars Bobby, Edinburgh's famously loyal terrier.

Literary Stop
Victoria Street

One of Edinburgh's most atmospheric streets — a curved row of colorful shopfronts that visitors often say captures the visual feeling of Diagon Alley. It isn't an actual filming location, but it's a lovely, photogenic place to slow down and browse. Give it real time.

Optional
Royal Mile & Old Town

Let the rest of the afternoon breathe — no need to turn every stop into an appointment. Possible stops as you wander: Royal Mile, St Giles' Cathedral, Grassmarket, the historic closes, independent shops, cafés and bookstores.

Bookish Detour — Optional
Blackwell's Edinburgh

Include if it's convenient along your walking route today. It's optional because Topping & Company is tomorrow's priority bookstore.

September 18

Castles, Books & Scottish Craft

Booked Experience
Edinburgh Castle Guided Walking Tour + Entry
Time
Booked morning tour · exact time to be added
Duration
~90 minutes, guided
What to bring
Comfortable shoes, camera, layers
Meeting point
Edinburgh Castle, Castlehill, Edinburgh
Open in Maps

This is your actual Edinburgh Castle sightseeing visit — entry is included. Viator 69714P3. Highlights may include castle history, the Crown Jewels / Honours of Scotland, the Royal Palace, the Great Hall, historic defenses, Argyle Battery, the grounds, and panoramic views over the city.

The guided portion ends inside the castle — you're welcome (and encouraged) to keep exploring on your own afterward.

Erica's Tip

If your castle timing allows, the One O'Clock Gun is worth catching. But you have the Harris Tweed workshop at 2:00 PM — if staying for the gun would make the walk to Sibbald Walk feel rushed, skip it and prioritize the workshop instead.

Transportation
Castle → Canongate

Build in comfortable time for: leaving the castle, walking down through Old Town / Royal Mile, lunch, and reaching Sibbald Walk before 2:00 PM. Keep lunch quick and convenient along the route rather than a leisurely sit-down — the timing is tighter than it looks on a map.

Ricardo's Free Time
While She's at the Workshop

Stay close to Canongate rather than crossing town for something big. Good options nearby: a pub, coffee, wandering the Royal Mile, exploring Canongate itself, the Scottish Parliament exterior, nearby shops, or simply relaxing.

Bookish Detour — Priority
Topping & Company Booksellers

Your priority Edinburgh bookstore — worth working into whichever point of the day makes the most sense geographically (before the castle if morning allows, or after the workshop if not). Give yourselves real browsing time, not a five-minute photo stop.

Optional Literary Moment
The Balmoral

J.K. Rowling famously completed Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in a room at The Balmoral. It's a nice optional stop for a drink, tea, a photograph, or just seeing the hotel — not a required appointment.

Dinner: Wedgwood the Restaurant, Royal Mile — a reservation is recommended if you'd like a more special evening.
Worth Knowing

Tomorrow is an extremely early start — your Highlands tour departs at 7:15 AM. An early night tonight will make a real difference.

Region Two

The Highlands

The landscape opens up. You'll travel into the Scottish Highlands and board the Jacobite Steam Train through scenery made famous by the Hogwarts Express.

September 19

The day features the Scottish Highlands, Glenfinnan, the Glenfinnan Viaduct, Loch Shiel, Mallaig, the Jacobite Steam Train, Fort William, Glencoe, and dramatic Highland scenery throughout.

Signature Experience
Riding the Hogwarts Express Route

The Jacobite Steam Train journey travels through the scenery used for the Hogwarts Express in the films — including the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct. Real train, real landscape, genuinely magical without needing to embellish it.

What to Pack Today
Waterproof jacket
Layers
Comfortable shoes
Water & snacks
Portable charger

Highland weather can shift quickly — sun, wind and rain can all show up in the same afternoon.

Evening

No hard reservation tonight — you may well be pleasantly exhausted. Keep dinner easy and close to the hotel.

Region Three

London

You'll arrive by rail at King's Cross and immediately encounter Platform 9¾, before discovering London's bookish side. Two day trips — Oxford and Warner Bros. Studio Tour — happen from here and have their own sections below; London itself brackets the whole stay, from arrival through departure.

A floating independent bookshop on Regent's Canal, and a priority stop for you two. Pair it naturally with Granary Square and Coal Drops Yard, both close by.

Dinner: Dishoom King's Cross is recommended — treat it as a suggestion rather than a booked reservation unless one is added later.

The route may take in Borough Market, the Millennium Bridge, central London Potter locations, and Covent Garden / the West End.

Bookish Detour — Strong Recommendation
Cecil Court

A short pedestrian lane of antiquarian bookshops, prints, maps and collectible editions — a real treat after the walking tour, transitioning from movie locations into literary London.

Potter Design Stop
House of MinaLima

MinaLima designed the graphic art of the Harry Potter films — the shop is full of prints, books, design pieces and beautiful editions worth browsing.

157 Wardour Street, London

Optional
Leadenhall Market

Include only if routing and energy make sense for the day — a nice-to-have, not a must.

What to bring

Meeting point

Important: you specifically booked the version with Christ Church included — Viator 22673P35. Highlights may include Christ Church, the famous staircase, the Divinity School, the Bodleian area, Oxford colleges, Potter filming connections, and historic university architecture.

Oxford is a working university, so access to individual buildings can occasionally change at short notice.

Bookish Oxford — Priority
Blackwell's Oxford

After the tour you'll have substantial free time — give yourselves real browsing time here. Weave in literary connections to J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Lewis Carroll and Oxford's broader literary history as discoveries along the way, not another guided tour. (If the Eagle and Child is still closed for restoration, have a backup café in mind rather than counting on it.)

Food: Permit Room Oxford is a good casual option, or keep central Oxford dining flexible.

How to get there

Meeting point

Open in Maps

The booked time is 11:05 AM — not 11:00. Viator 6295P23. Always check your final Viator voucher before leaving the hotel, in case anything changes.

The guided experience handles the journey from here — do not buy separate rail tickets:

Euston→ train →Watford→ shuttle →Warner Bros. Studio Tour
Studio Highlights

The Great Hall, Diagon Alley, the Forbidden Forest, the Hogwarts Express, Platform 9¾, Gringotts, costumes, props, practical effects, sets, and the Hogwarts Castle model.

Seasonal Experience — Dark Arts

Your visit falls during the seasonal Dark Arts experience — a distinctly atmospheric layer on top of the regular tour, worth setting extra time aside for.

Erica's Tip

Don't rush away after the guided portion. Revisit favorite areas, explore independently, photograph the sets, shop, try Butterbeer, and spend real time with the Hogwarts Castle model. This is meant to be the grand finale of the Potter side of the trip.

Evening

No hard dinner reservation — eat after you're back in London.

Before You Fly

Travel Essentials

Two things worth handling well before departure day — neither is optional for U.S. passport holders.

Passport

A valid passport is required, and it must remain valid for the duration of your UK stay. Double-check passport validity, condition, and that the name on it exactly matches the name on your reservations — well before departure, not the week of.

UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) — Required

U.S. travelers visiting the United Kingdom must obtain a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation before travel, unless they fall into a specific exemption category.

  • The ETA is electronically linked to your passport.
  • Each traveler needs their own individual authorization.
  • Use the same passport for the application and for travel.
  • A new passport requires a new ETA.
  • Don't wait until departure day to apply.
Apply for UK ETA

This links directly to the official UK government ETA application — not a third-party visa service. Current fees and processing times are shown on that official page, since they can change over time.
